Do not bring your NOTHINGNESS to AKA!

Will you be an active member?
The kind that would be missed
Or will you just be content
That your name is on the list?
Will you attend the meetings?
And mingle with the flock
Or will you just meet in private
And criticize and "knock?"
Will you take an active part?
To help the work along
Or will you be satisfied to be
The kind that just belongs?
Will you work on committees?
To these it is no trick
Or leave the work to just a few
And talk about the clique?
There’s more to being an AKA
than wearing pink and green,
showing up in your letters,
only trying to be seen
Please come to meetings often
And help with hand and true heart
Don’t just be a member,
But one who takes an active part
Think it over potential members
You know what’s right from wrong
Will you be an active member?
Or do you just want to belong?

What Does it Take to Be an AKA?

You think it just takes pink and green or just a pretty face.
Light skin or long hair are the women those letters grace.

Well, you couldn't be more wrong about my beloved sorority.
Chocolate, honey, and caramel are the shades of ebony you'll see.

It takes more than nice clothing, bouncy hair,  and a pretty face,
It takes distinction, class, style, and the highest GPA.

You must sacrifice, persevere, and carry yourself as a woman should.
These are some of the qualities to possess,  to be a part of my

exclusive sisterhood.

Don't be grating to the members, do your research on your own,
You may find that ALPHA land was not meant to  be your home.

To wear these lovely colors of salmon pink and apple green,
you must be a sophistAKAted, college-educated, refined black queen.

It won't come easy and you'll need to pray,
To be so blessed to cross the threshold of AKA.

"What it Takes"

It takes more than a look
to wear twenty pearls
It takes more than an attitude
to grace these words
It's the test of a woman
to withstand the circumstance
to stand by her word
and wait for her chance
she won't change her mind
or lose her heart
to settle for a sisterhood that
wasn't the first
an A-K-A woman
knows what she wants
and against all odds
will prove her worth
perfection can't be "rushed"
so understand
that it's oh "so hard" to be an A-K-A

The Struggle

In the beginning an ordinary piece of sand.
In the end, a priceless pearl.

We start at the beginning of the hill.
Getting to the top, is a matter of strength and will.

The surface is rocky, the slope is steep.
Sometimes we crawl; Once in a while we leap.
Over the invisible hurdles, strong enough to make us weep.

The mind is challenged, the body is worn.
The days are long, and the pride is torn.
But in the end, a new creature is born.

An Alpha Kappa Alpha woman standing sleek and tall.
Ready to challenge the world, unable to fall.

Alpha Kappa Alpha, what does it mean?
Certainly more than wearing pink and green.

Alpha Kappa Alpha is deep down in my soul.
I AM an Alpha Kappa Alpha woman.
I am whole.

A Model Woman for All Woman Kind

We set the standard in 1908
For others can only imitate
Our style, our grace, our sisterhood
Unparalleled -as we knew it would.

Imitation is the highest form of flattery
Remember all others came from me
Not only do we continue to set the standard
Whatever you do, we still do it better.

We strive to do things that are worthwhile
AKAdemics and Supreme Service to all mankind
Through the years we've grown from 20 pearls
with strength and endurance to rule the world.

A model woman for all woman kind
Look at an ALPHA WOMAN and you will find
A woman tested - not afraid to fail
A master, a captain - one who blazes trails.

What is a Soror?

A soror is someone who is more special than words.
She is someone with whom you have a common bond-through the sisterhood.

She is love mixed with friendship-the best things in life.
She is one of the most precious individuals in the world.
And you'll always find her whether you're near or apart, for she is in every city, town, and nation.

She might be referred to as a "Sands" or "Line Sister."
How special!
Together you have shared moments in your lives.

A soror is a confidante and a counselor.
She's a wonderful friend. She's there when you need her-during the good times or the bad.
She represents honesty and trust enfolded in love.

And she may even be your mother, sister, daughter, aunt, grandmother, cousin, or friend.

HOW WONDERFUL!

AKAtude...

Conceited we're called
Because we stand tall
Uppity we're deemed
Due to our self-esteem
Our noses are always in the air
For looking downward we don't dare
And continue with pride
Realizing that if you're a lady
You're automatically downgraded
Sophistication and Class is a plus
Although others don't view it as much
Their thoughts are so remote
But when we were founded
Women couldn't vote
Civil rights were a luxury
In the early 20th Century
AKA was very political
Although they laugh and act very cynical
So remember the next time they jeer,
You were the FIRST to be here
Deleting all that was not good
And replacing it with SISTERHOOD
Setting a trend for all the rest
Proving that they could be the very best.
As ladies we must learn
Nothing is given, all is earned
With this in mind
You'll ultimately find
That it's a flair
It's a mood
We call it AKATUDE

What is an Alpha Kappa Alpha Woman?

Alpha Kappa Alpha Mystique
Beauty unparalleled, grace undefined,
An Alpha Kappa Alpha Woman is one of a kind.
She walks in a room with her head held high,
Acknowledgement of her presence is an awe-filled gaze, or admiring sigh.
The Alpha Kappa Alpha Woman is regal and profound.
She is the essence of feminism and these qualities abound.
The Alpha Kappa Alpha Woman is honorable and oh so unique.
All of these qualities culminated,
Created the Alpha Kappa Alpha Mystique.

By Soror April Draine, Zeta Delta Chapter

The Phenemomenal AKA

From afar onlookers Glare
And some cannot help but stare,
To her regal beauty no others can compare.

Who is this classy lady?
Who could she be, they say?
None other than the epitome of Grace & Elegance
The Essence of AKA.

This Lady of Distinction is both Bold & Smooth.
Even her Ice Cold Brothers give her props,
In spite of her AKAtude

When she steps into the place, her entrance is Grand
Making even naysayers and playahaters stand
As her insouciant style illuminates the room
An Ivy in all her splendor, Hailing in full bloom.

You see, not many are privy
To the power of the Pink Prowess
In fact, most have opted to settle for less.

Who is this classy lady?
Who could she be, they say?
I say it's none other than that
Educated
Sophisticated
Liberated Soror of mine
The Phenemomenal AKA.

AKA...and ??

In 1908, Soror Lyle wanted to make things better
So she created an organization
Where black women could come together
Shoot, I don't know about you,
But I think that was pretty clever.

It started in Miner Hall
When the ivy was on the wall
These women's talents were tall
And our Beloved Splendid Sixteen
Took on the challenge... held it to high esteem.

The four incorporators
Were the real innovators
Made sure the dream could continue
After that, there could only be imitators.

That AKA dream
Had us standing tall
It's been over 90 years
With all the work we've done, is that all??

We, ladies of AKA have style, elegance
And so much flair.
We do our work with grace, class
And lots of care.

We don't settle for less
We go for the top... the very best.
We surpass all the rest.
If you don't know, put US to the test!!!

So if anyone asks you
Girl, why do you look so grand?
Why do you walk so tall?
Why are YOU in high demand?

You just say...
I'm an AKA... and??

And God Said . . .

“I’ll make a woman”

A woman of substance,

A woman of pride,

A woman who is able to put petty things aside.

A woman of integrity,

A woman of love,

A woman who is worthy of treasures from above.

A woman who is genuine,

A leader in every way,

God Said…“I’ll make a woman”

I’ll call her

AKA Woman
(Adapted from Soror Maya Angelou's Phenomenal Woman)

Other women wonder why I'm so refined
Cause I'm not a Zeta, SGRho, or Delta of those kind
When I try to explain
They think I'm playing games
I say
It's the grandeur of my ivy
The grace of revered sixteen
The splendor of my twenty pearls
Envy of the pink and green
I'm a woman
Alpha Kappa Alpha
AKA Woman
That's me

I glide into a room
Very sophisticated you see
And yes the men
Stop when they see me
And drop their mouths in disbelief
They gather round to perceive
If I'm real or the woman of their fantasy
I say
It's the air of my confidence
The many degrees I hold
The intellect of my speech
The beauty of my soul
I'm a woman
Alpha Kappa Alpha
AKA woman
That's me

Other sororities have pondered
Why they can't emulate
They try so hard
But they can't conceive
The depths of my sorority
When I try to explain
They say "I can't equate"
I say
It's the respect of my community
The love of my sisters
Pride in my sorority
And its great history
I'm a woman
Alpha Kappa Alpha
AKA woman
That's me

Now you know
Why I hold my head up so proud
I don't have to wear red, blue or yellow
To be recognized in a crowd
As you gaze at my stance
It ought to make you proud
I say
It's in the stride of my step
The bounce of my hair
The way I hold my pinky
No other can compare
Cause I'm a woman
Alpha Kappa Alpha
AKA woman
Skee-Wee

I AM ALPHA

In 1906, 7 young men from Cornell
Shared a vision that could never fail
Their vision was made a reality
Creating for all others, an opportunity
The first black Greek organization was created
A brotherhood never to be duplicated
A selective union, allowing only a certain type of man
An ALPHA man strong , intelligent and proud
That type of man who stands out in a crowd
Emphasizing service and unity
A model which others would soon see
They were the founding fathers who led the way
And then from ALPHA came AKA
Created by 20 precious pearls
1908 was the year of the pretty girls
The first black Greek sorority
Holding true values of unity,
Scholarship, and service to all mankind
The model woman for all womankind
With this the first family is now complete
Accept the truth and bow before our feet
Don't deny your history, for it is the truth
You should never deny me, you must respect your roots
I am your mother
I am your father
I am

What Is A Queen?

What is a queen and how do you put it into words?

Is it the crown on her head, or the eloquence of her verse?

NO-This merely helps to identify who she is.

For a queen has the intelligence of 1,000 great minds,

God so lovingly put it into one.

She's diligent, innovative and never ceases to get the job done.

Her spirit eases the hearts of children, women, men and the like;

And the love she projects, can cast a beacon on any dark night.

A queen is not just any woman you pass by everyday.

When you see her-you know who she is.

Her beauty, grace and poise will astound you;

The wit, charisma, and charm she also embodies,

makes other females seek to emulate her.

Some men may ask-Are there really women around like this today?

Believe when I tell you;

God created it-Its SUPPOSED to be that way.

You can go around the world and never find another one like her.

For she is unique and genuine;

The pearl that all should be and are compared to.

God created a queen, understand this today.

But please, do remember.....

Her name is AKA!
