Alpha Kappa Alpha National Programs

The National Program theme for 2002-2006 is "THE SPIRIT OF ALPHA KAPPA ALPHA". The focus is on Education. The five areas included in the National Program and implemented in Chapter Planning.  The Five Target areas are:

The major crisis in American Education today is the inability of our children to read. They enter school lacking the very basic skills to begin the reading process and end up being unable to adequately perform in the academic areas that they will need to successfully compete throughout school and later in the workplace.

Therefore, our new Signature Program is “The Ivy Reading AKAdemy.” The Ivy AKAdemy serves as a comprehensive center for all the educational and human resources development experiences for most community services programs provided by Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority Inc. Participants are youth and adults from the entire community. The reading initiative will focus on early learning and mastery of basic reading skills by the end of third grade. All chapters are requested to implement a kindergarten through third grade after school reading initiative. A 2.7 million dollar proposal is currently pending with the United States Department of Education to fund a 3-year nationwide after school demonstration project in low-performing, economically deprived, inner city schools in 16 sites in the continental United States.

Our goal is QUALITY EDUCATION for all. This target focuses on AKA, the acronym for “AKA KIDS ALERT.” IVY AKAdemy will continue to serve as the umbrella for all educational training and human resource development experiences provided by local chapters and will stress reading, writing, speaking, listening, mathematics, science and technology.

Health

This program target focuses on health issues that disproportionately affect minority populations, especially African Americans as well as health issues specified in the President’s Race Initiatives. Healthy bodies make healthy minds; therefore we must encourage youth and adults to take good care of themselves, eat well, exercise and enjoy good physical and mental health.

APAC - Awareness Prevention and Action on Cancer in Women
The goal of this initiative is to educate and raise the level of cancer awareness among the membership, their families, and the communities they serve. Further, this initiative is meant to communicate the importance of early detection of the disease in terms of reducing the risk.

Buckle-Up America - The goal of Buckle-Up America program is to build upon the momentum began in 1999 by continuing to engage chapters in this important health and safety initiative and focus on changing behavior to increase seat belt use among minorities.

The Black

Family

This program address issues that divide the black family, at-risk youth, family values for middle and high school youth, and AKA Coat Day for homeless families.

“ON-TRACK” is the Signature Program for this administration. The focus is promoting family togetherness, it is prized; reestablish family ties; help parents consider the well being of their children; alleviate homelessness so that it doesn’t exist.

Martin Luther King Jr. Day of Service - The goal is to celebrate the life and teachings of MLK, Jr., through service to others and encourage the community service through partnerships and other organizations.
National Family Volunteer Day - The goal is to strengthen the family by promoting positive values and providing worthwhile service to communities while raising the awareness of the importance of family volunteering.

Economics

This program focuses on financial planning and management, employment, entrepreneurship and Black Dollar Days and Black Dollar Month, which is in April. We can only prosper if we are prepared for the work force, if we get the high paying jobs, and if we promote black businesses. It is important that the Black community gain empowerment.

Therefore, we are implementing  Tax Freedom Day.  The goal is to assist students, low income tax filers, and senior citizens to file their tax returns electronically at no cost.

The Arts This program will promote Chapter Summer Arts Programs and arts performances at conferences. It will recognize African Americans in the Arts.  Alpha Kappa Alpha can fill the void of nonexistent art curriculum that are no longer in some schools. The arts can improve the quality of life for all mankind. The arts can be a meaningful vehicle for communication and education.
