The chartering of the Gamma Sigma chapter of Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Inc. marked the beginning of the Greek Letter movement among women at Albany State University. Since 1949, Gamma Sigma has worked to be of service to all mankind. Mrs. Martha I. Brown (wife of Dr. Aaron Brown, the second president of Albany State College) spearheaded the effort to bring an undergraduate chapter of Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Inc. to Albany, Georgia. The Delta Eta Omega of Alpha Kappa Alpha was chartered in 1946 and three years later, in 1949, the Gamma Sigma chapter was chartered on Albany State's campus. The twelve young ladies who were our charter members include: |
