History of the Gamma Sigma Chapter

Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Incorporated

The chartering of the Gamma Sigma chapter of Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Inc. marked the beginning of the Greek Letter movement among women at Albany State University.  Since 1949, Gamma Sigma has worked to be of service to all mankind.

Mrs. Martha I. Brown (wife of Dr. Aaron Brown, the second president of Albany State College) spearheaded the effort to bring an undergraduate chapter of Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Inc. to Albany, Georgia.  The Delta Eta Omega of Alpha Kappa Alpha was chartered in 1946 and three years later, in 1949, the Gamma Sigma chapter was chartered on Albany State's campus.  The twelve young ladies who were our charter members include:

Ms. Royace Bacon

Ms. Katie Billingslea

Ms. Mary Ella Clark (First President)

Ms. Deotis Craig

Ms. Dorothy Gibson

Ms. Constance Jones

Ms. Brownie Lattimore

Ms. Carolyn Mariano

Ms. Mary Moore

Ms. Beatrice Poole

Ms. Altermese Roberts

Ms. Ethel Simmons

Ms. Aileen Harris served as the first Graduate Advisor.

Today, there are 49 dynamic visionary ladies who are carrying on the legacy of the Founders.  We are involved in the Senior Citizens' at Dennis Homes and Salvation Army Christmas Assistance Projects.
